The Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued its final fitness order allowing ExpressJet Airlines to restart commercial operations.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, UNITED STATES, July 30, 2021 / — The Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued its final fitness order allowing ExpressJet Airlines to restart commercial operations. ExpressJet stopped flying last year after the termination of its United Express operations. The passage of time required the company to seek DOT fitness recertification in order to “reboot.”

ExpressJet is a commercial passenger airline (Part 121 FAA certificated), headquartered in College Park, GA – near Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport – and currently operates 50-seat Embraer ERJ145 aircraft.

As described in its DOT filing, ExpressJet expects to resume service within the quarter with a focus on cities, markets, and customers that have seen diminished air service as a result of airline consolidation and an industry trend towards larger aircraft. ExpressJet will leverage its 35-year history of having flown several hundred aircraft to most of America’s smaller airports and intends to provide service in small and abandoned markets with unmet customer needs – avoiding needless overlap with the major airlines and “ultra-low-cost carriers.”

ExpressJet expects to unveil its detailed flying plans in the coming weeks.

Resumption of service will allow ExpressJet to begin recalling and reinstating furloughed employees. A majority will be covered by collective bargaining agreements with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT).

CIT and VISA Begin Development of an Unmanned Systems Playbook For Hampton Roads and Eastern Shore to meet growing customer demand for innovative UXS solutions.

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, USA, July 30, 2021 / — The Virginia Institute for Space Flight & Autonomy (VISA) and Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) have launched a program to develop a Hampton Roads-Eastern Shore Unmanned Systems (UxS) Strategic Playbook to focus on the continued development and expansion of unmanned ground, aerial, maritime, and space technologies.

The announcement of the playbook and search for UxS solutions began with the Unmanned Systems UxS Industry Engagement Summit on July 28 at Half Moone Cruise & Celebration Center at Nauticus. The event, attended by more than 150 Hampton Roads innovation leaders, presented challenges identified by public safety leadership during an intensive maritime safety workshop held a few weeks ago. Those challenges were presented at the Summit to industry representatives to initiate creative solutions and problem-solving options that utilized autonomous technologies for faster, safer, and more cost-effective emergency response.

The workshop was conducted with support from the Office of the Virginia Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security. The participants, which included the U.S. Coast Guard, the Virginia Port Authority, the Center for Naval Analysis, and local public safety agencies, evaluated new autonomous technologies and determined their potential impact and effectiveness at maritime ports. It also included a several mock challenges to focus engagement with industry on specific real-world scenarios using autonomous technology for better, faster, cleaner, and more efficient emergency responses.

VISA is a research enterprise of the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (VMASC) at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. As the nonprofit operations arm of the Virginia Innovation Partnership Authority (VIPA), CIT is the primary source for information, grants, partnerships, and seed funding for UxS in the Commonwealth. Through a memorandum of understanding, VISA will initiate and implement pilot programs in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore to support CIT’s UxS strategic plan to grow the industry across Virginia.

“VISA and CIT will work together to identify promising business opportunities for innovators of unmanned technology in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore,” said Tracy Tynan, director of the Virginia Unmanned Systems Center at CIT. “By working with VISA, we will capitalize on the strengths of the region to build on the Commonwealth’s industry leadership to encourage customer demand.”

In addition, CIT is creating the Virginia Public Safety Innovation Center (VPSIC), which will be led by Chris Sadler, the deputy chief/deputy director of York County Fire and Life Safety. The VPSIC will test emerging technologies and their ability to aid and benefit first responders and the communities they serve. It will help ensure public safety agencies across the Commonwealth have access to the latest technology to support their missions.

Parallel Flight Technologies Receives Phase 2 SBIR Grant from USDA

Research grant will support the development of a large-scale unmanned solution for prescribed fires.

LA SELVA BEACH, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, July 29, 2021 / — Parallel Flight Technologies (PFT), a leader in heavy-lift drone technology, today announced the receipt of a Phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the USDA. The $650,000 grant was awarded to PFT and Drone Amplified, the developer of the IGNIS prescribed fire system, to support further development of a large-scale UAS for prescribed fire.

This Phase 2 grant follows the companies’ recent completion of a Phase 1 grant that demonstrated successful integration of PFT’s heavy-lift aircraft and Drone Amplified’s IGNIS system. The goal for the Phase 2 grant work is to deliver this large-scale unmanned prescribed fire solution based on PFT’s proprietary parallel hybrid technology for use by the US Forest Service and other agencies. PFT’s research indicates that this UAS will have eight times the payload carrying capacity of the existing solution as well as ten times the flight duration, resulting in more acres managed by prescribed fire at a lower cost and with increased safety for personnel. It will also provide more effective prescribed fire during active wildfires.

“This work is incredibly important to us because it is one example of how our technology will be used to save lives, property and the environment,” said Joshua Resnick, CEO of Parallel Flight Technologies. “This land management solution can play a huge role in controlling and preventing wildfires. Tragically, a number of helicopter pilots have died during controlled aerial ignition missions, as it is a low and slow operation with no room to recover. Using drones will not only lower the cost of land management to prevent large-scale wildfires, but also prevent helicopter accidents.”

Parallel Flight Technologies' heavy-lift parallel hybrid drone has enough payload capacity for 3,500 incendiary spheres and is anticipated to be able to ignite 1,000 acres in a single flight.

The African Americans in Aviation Traveling Museum Launches Nationwide Tour

DIAMOND BAR, CA, UNITED STATES, July 29, 2021 / — National College Resources Foundation’s partnership with Chauncey E. Spencer II continues to grow the awareness of the contribution of African Americans in Aviation with a three-city summer tour. This traveling museum is significant because it focuses on the life of a pioneer, Chauncey Spencer who fought for racial equality and changed the course of aviation and social history in America. He met with then Senator Harry S. Truman and convinced him to support the inclusion of African Americans in the U. S. Air Force.

“I think this trip is very important, this is the second year that we’ve traveled cross-country and each time we have defined the purpose with success. Education is important but more important than that is constant education, never stopping and always going forward for the betterment of mankind and improving our community,” states Mr. Spencer.

The traveling museum is driven by Chauncey E. Spencer II accompanied by Lavelle DeHughes, NCRF scholarship alum and scholarship recipient at Tuskegee University Institute of Aviation program where he is majoring in Aerospace Science Engineering. He also has the distinction of being chosen as a 2021 Red Tails Scholar. Mr. Spencer is excited to have LaVelle with him knowing he will have the opportunity to share some valuable history of the Tuskegee Airmen that will enhance his journey.

The tour will start out in Oshkosh, Wisconsin at the EAA Adventure Airshow (7/26-8/1); in Chicago, Illinois, it will visit Wendell Phillips Academy High School, Coffey School of Aeronautics, and Dunbar Vocational High School (8/2-8/4); in Detroit, Michigan stops are scheduled at Charles Wright African American Museum and Coleman Young International Airport (8/5–8/7).

As part of NCRF’s S.T.E.A.M. program, the traveling museum exists to inspire students interested in aviation and the Aerospace industry. Dr. Theresa Price comments, “There would be no Tuskegee Airmen, no Red Tails without Mr. Spencer. He paved the way for black pilots and astronauts. We want all to know, young and old, about the history and sacrifices made by the black aviators who were responsible for convincing Congress to include blacks in the pre-World War II Civilian Pilot Training Program.”

NCRF is a 501c3 organization that has created programs and initiatives to provide guidance, resources, information, and pipelines to empower students toward positive post-secondary pursuits. NCRF’s mission is to curtail the high school dropout rate and increase degree and/or certificate enrollment among underserved and underrepresented students. NCRF’s vision is to close the gap in educational achievement, workforce, and economic disparities with the goal to end racism and racial inequality.
