A Trifecta of Firsts at Winston-Salem Composite Squadron
By: Capt. John Hunter, CAP
Historian, Winston-Salem Composite Squadron
Cadets Jordan Plott and Micah Plott took flight with Captain John Hunter on their first orientation flight. Ironically, it was the first orientation flight flown for Captain Hunter.
First flights provide an opportunity to expose cadets to the science of flight and the multi-faceted components required to facilitate a safe and enjoyable flying experience. Before launching, cadets were briefed about safe ground operations as well as the safe operating procedures once in the air.
Each cadet was given the opportunity to “feel the aircraft fly” and understand how some of the instrument’s work. All cadets are provided the opportunity to experience five orientation flights, each flight structured with different learning outcomes.
While the orientation flights cannot be logged as flight instruction, the flights provide exposure for cadets to learn about the requirements for pilot training. Civil Air Patrol provides those opportunities. It was a wonderful #DayofFirsts for everyone. Captain Hunter noted that he received his first orientation flight as a cadet in 1974. His logbook has come full circle.
Many thanks to our Aircraft Maintenance Officers and Flight Release Officers who contributed to this safe flight experience. Each cadet was given a personal challenge coin which highlights our “Firsts in Aviation.”
