Security Alert Forces United Airlines Flight to Return to Newark

(MENAFN) A United Airlines flight traveling from Newark Liberty International Airport to Spain was forced to return to its departure point on Saturday after a suspected security concern emerged during the journey, according to reports.

The aircraft, a Boeing 767 headed to Palma de Mallorca, departed Newark at approximately 6 p.m. local time (2200 GMT). However, after spending nearly three hours in the air, the flight changed course and landed back in New Jersey at around 8:50 p.m. local time (0050 GMT Sunday), according to flight-tracking information cited in reports.

According to reports, the incident began when cabin crew repeatedly instructed passengers to disable Bluetooth-enabled devices. Despite those requests, two devices reportedly remained active. A subsequent review revealed that one Bluetooth device was broadcasting a threatening name, prompting security concerns aboard the aircraft.

Reports later indicated that the device name was identified as "BOMB."

After consulting with the airline’s operations center in Chicago, the flight crew decided to return to Newark as a precautionary measure.

According to reports, the aircraft was carrying 190 passengers and 12 crew members at the time of the incident.

Upon landing, passengers were instructed to leave the plane with only their passports and mobile phones. Authorities then conducted security procedures, including additional screening by transportation and border security officials, before travelers were allowed to board a replacement aircraft operated by a different crew.
