Naval Air Station Pensacola holds annual Bells Across America for Fallen Service Members ceremony at Naval Aviation Memorial Chapel
Retired U.S. Army Cavalry Scout and combat veteran, Robert “Matt” McDaniel, was the guest speaker for the ceremony.
As an initiative of the Navy Gold Star program, ceremonies were conducted concurrently throughout the United States to remember and celebrate the lives of fallen service members from all branches of the military, regardless of their cause of death.
The Navy Gold Star program serves as the advocate for the families and provides support, information and services such as reserved Gold Star family parking. Base Commanders have designated parking in various locations such as the Commissary, Exchanges, FFSC and Military Treatment Facilities (MTF) to promote awareness, educate the military community on the sacrifices of families of deceased active duty and to honor their loss.
Capt. Chandra Newman, commanding officer of NAS Pensacola, delivered the opening remarks for the ceremony.
“Your loved one has given the ultimate sacrifice and we know that there is nothing we can say or do that will completely comfort you in your loss, but we are dedicated to delivering on the promise of taking care of our own by providing support to surviving families,” said Newman. “For us here at NAS Pensacola, there is no greater honor than to support the families of those who have died in service to our nation.”
Bells Across America is held at U.S. military installations worldwide on the same day and is coordinated in partnership with the Gold Star Program. NGS Program supports family members of fallen military members by providing them with resources as well as assisting with counseling, financial planning and job hunting. NGS personnel also assist with paperwork and requests for documents while ensuring survivors remain connected with the Navy family.
Founded in 1826, Naval Air Station Pensacola, known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation,” supports operational and training missions for several tenant commands, Naval Air Technical Training Center, Naval Aviation Schools Command and Center for Technical Training. The installation also hosts Marine Aviation Training Support Group 21 and Marine Aviation Training Support Group 23 and serves as the headquarters for Naval Education and Training Command. In addition to an active airfield, NAS Pensacola maintains a deepwater port supporting operations for the U.S. Coast Guard.
